At the bottom of the valley along the Swiss Alps sits the magical village of Lauterbrunnen. It is without a doubt one of the most beautiful places in the world. Even the name “Lauterbrunnen,” meaning “clear spring,” is wonderfully charming.
Whether you’d like to take a breathtaking three-mile hike, or if visiting the shops of a quaint little mountain village is more your speed, Lauterbrunnen does not disappoint. Its old country atmosphere mixed with the devastating gorgeous views of the surrounding Alps makes for an unforgettable, one of a kind experience.
Get inspired
Though it’s not a wildly popular tourist destination, it’s not exactly a secret that Lauterbrunnen has got the goods. The thundering waterfalls breathtaking cliffs have inspired many notable writers and poets.
J.R.R. Tolkien found inspiration for Rivendell, the Elven realm written about in many of his works including The Lord of the Rings, while on a hike to Lauterbrunnen. The 1969 James Bond film On Her Majesty’s Secret Service was filmed there.
So much room for activities
Lauterbrunnen boasts 72 waterfalls, plunging from steep vertical cliffs everywhere you look. In fact, you can hear the tranquil sound of water cascading down the rocks from anywhere in the village.
Visit in the Springtime to be treated to vast, open fields filled with blooming dandelions. It’s a sea of yellow as far as you can see. Vibrantly green grass makes up the foundation of a village that is truly a dazzling display of color.
Take a hike to Stechelberg for a sensory delight. The trek is relatively easy, with mostly flat and wide roads making up the 6.7 kilometer trip. Listen to the sound of the surrounding waterfalls and cowbells in the distance, and look at the stunning landscapes and ever-enclosing Swiss Alps along the way.
