Everyone wants to live in a nice big house with marble floors, vaulted ceilings and an in-ground pool in the backyard overlooking a breathtaking vista. However, most people can’t afford to spend millions on their home. That doesn’t mean you can’t take steps to make your current space more like your dream home, though!
How Can You Improve Your Home?
Small improvements can go a long way when you’re trying to make your home nicer and more like a dream home. It’s just a matter of making the most of your budget. Here are a few quick ways you can make your place even nicer!
Kitchen Remodel
The linoleum in your kitchen might be outdated and maybe you hate the countertops. Heck, the cabinets were put in when the house was built! Maybe it’s time for a kitchen remodel. A contractor company can help you organize a full remodel, giving you nice, new tile floor, countertops in your favorite material and new cabinets to match the new kitchen appearance.
If you want a cheaper approach, look at kitchen refresh options rather than total remodels. Maybe those cabinets are fine after a simple coat of paint? Maybe a new sink fixture will spruce up the view enough. Be creative and search for ideas on sites like Pinterest.
Bathroom Remodel
The same can be said of your bathroom. If the tub is old and needs to be replaced, the sink is leaky and outdated and you can’t stand the commode always running, you could hire a contractor to remodel the room for you. They can get everything matching just right, and update the tile and shower to your specifications. Who says this place can’t be your dream home?
If you want to do it yourself, then look into replacing your toilet with a new water-efficient model. Toilet swaps aren’t incredibly difficult – you could accomplish it in a weekend! And you may end up saving a little money on your water bill to boot! You could also look at replacing towel racks, shower curtains or the mirror. If your bathroom sink is cluttered, why not install a cabinet over or your toilet (or anywhere you have some wall space)?
Getting a Pool
Depending on your locality and zoning, you could have a pool put in your backyard. While this might be a bit pricey, it almost always costs less than buying a house with a pool already installed. Not to mention, this could dramatically increase the value of your home (depending on your region). Also, who doesn’t love having friends over for a pool party?
Unfortunately, this isn’t an endeavor you can DIY or pull off on the cheap. We advise you to stay away from the cheap above-ground pool installations. It will likely drag your home value down.
Replacing Carpet
A quick way to class up a home is to get rid of the carpet. The 70’s, 80’s and 90’s trend of putting carpet all over original hardwood floors has left a generation of homes with gross-looking floors. It’s not a hard process to get this carpet up and replaced with either the original hardwood or a new floor treatment of your choosing.
If you do have original hardwood under you carpets, then you have a chance to save money by doing some of the hard labor yourself. Scraping up carpet glue residue isn’t fun, I can tell you from experience, but it may save you a bundle on restoring your original floors.
A little improvement goes a long way to making your home more like your dream home. Not to mention, these tips will all increase the value of your home if you ever sell it to trade up to that mansion in the hills!
