Tips for Motivating Yourself and Sticking to a Workout Routine

Exercising is obviously a great healthy habit to have, but it can be really hard to stay motivated and make your new workout routine a permanent habit.

I mean, we’ve all done it. The warm weather hits, and you get super pumped up to start a new exercise routine. But as the days go by, it gets harder and harder to stay motivated as the enthusiasm fades.

So what do you do to keep at it?

Set Reachable Goals

It’s so easy to set all these lofty goals. We want rock hard abs, super toned legs, tiny waists, strong arms, no muffin tops….the list goes on. But it’s really not feasible to achieve every single one of these goals at once before hitting the beach in a month.

If you’re setting goals like that, you’re going to get discouraged, and quick.

Try setting small goals that are attainable. It’s okay to have a long term goal to keep in mind, but having a bunch of small goals that you work on one at a time can help you feel accomplished and keep you motivated.

Remind Yourself How Working Out Makes You Feel

When your motivation starts wavering, try thinking about how working out always makes you feel. The physical act of working out can help you feel more relaxed, helps you sleep better at night, and can give you a boost of energy. Thinking about how great you feel after a workout can be a great way to motivate yourself to get into the gym.

Create a Custom Playlist

Music around 120 to 140 beats per minute will encourage you to move, so throw together a custom workout playlist full of your favorite jams! It’ll be hard to resist.

Get a Fitness Tracker

There’s something about a wearable fitness tracker, like a FitBit, that really help you to keep going. It’s motivating to be able to track your progress in real time. Regardless of if you’re doing a cardio workout, going for a stroll around the neighborhood, or killing a spin class, a fitness tracker might do you a world of good.

Get a Workout Buddy

Finding that right person that will cheer you on as you do some pull ups is a great boost! Besides, having a workout buddy means you have someone that will hold you accountable.

If you don’t have a workout buddy, you could also get a personal trainer, which is kind of like a workout buddy that you pay to whip you into shape. Plus, if you don’t know where to begin, they’ll be knowledgeable enough to put together a workout routine specific for your body.

Join a 30-Day Challenge or Other Fitness Program

With challenges and other fitness programs, you’ll be forced to check in with other people to let them know you’re staying on track. It can also help you stay on track, because it will give you a set training or workout schedule. This can be especially helpful for individuals that are new to working out, or aren’t good at setting routines for themselves.
