Why You Need to See the Grand Canyon

Some bucket list items are a little less exciting than others. Trying a new type of coffee drink or adopting a new cat might not necessarily provide an adrenaline rush. But visiting the Grand Canyon would be a highlight of anyone’s bucket list. Everyone should absolutely take in the spectacular views of the Grand Canyon at least once in their life.

At 18 miles wide, 277 miles long and one mile deep, pictures cannot quite capture the beauty on display. There is so much to see that you will want to plan to stay for a few days to properly take it all in.

When to go

The peak season for visiting the Grand Canyon is June-August. However, the South Rim is open to the public year-round. Spring and Fall are often considered the best times to visit the Arizonian wonder. It’s a lot less scorchingly hot and the crowds are fewer.

South Rim and North Rim

The South Rim is the most popular destination for tourists and is located near Grand Canyon Village. The site is easily accessible and offers tourist-friendly hikes and viewpoints. Depending on your itinerary, you can do the South Rim in one day or several days.

Mather Point is commonly thought to be the best first view of the Canyon. For breathtaking views of the sunrise and sunset, check out Mohave Point, Hopi Point or Powell Point.

For a much quieter Grand Canyon experience, visit the North Rim. Only one in ten Canyon goers choose to spend their time at the North Rim. There are fewer viewpoints, but with the North Rim standing 1,000 feet higher in elevation than the South Rim, the sights are arguably better. Bright Angel Point and Cape Royal are the most popular vantage points.

Hike to the bottom

For the adventurous spirit, the best way to get the most out of your Grand Canyon trip is to plan a hike to the bottom. You will get some serious one-on-one time with the immaculate natural wonder.

At the bottom of the Canyon sits another world. You can book a lodge, though you’ll need to reserve your spot a year or more in advance due to how popular they are. From the bottom, you can take trips to exotic points like the Havasu Falls.

The Grand Canyon is a beautiful and wondrous chasm, with lots of areas to explore if you are willing to put in the footwork to make your way to the bottom.
