New York City’s pizza scene has never been stronger and more diverse. Celebrated pizzaiolos keep flocking to the City to set up shop to see if their pizza pies can compete. One of the most celebrated is Anthony Mangieri, who recently moved back to NYC from San Francisco in order to reopen Una Pizza Napoletana.
Yes, you can still get a dollar slice from one of several grab-and-go joints strewn about the city. But if you’re visiting and have plans of trying a New York slice, or if you’re local and want to shake things up, don’t miss out on one of these world-famous restaurants.
These pizza chefs source local ingredients and put more effort and care into their pies. You might have to wait a little longer and spend a little more money, but it’s worth it for the quality you get.
John’s of Bleecker Street
John’s of Bleecker Street is nothing less than a New York City institution. They have been serving up pies since 1929 and is considered to be one of four original pizzerias of NYC, along with Patsy’s, Lombardi’s and Totonno’s.
John’s pizza recipe has never changed, with the unique approach of adding the cheese to the dough before the sauce.
Una Pizza Napoletana
If you want a unique pizza experience, look no further than Una Pizza Napoletana. Owner Anthony Mangieri has been tirelessly perfecting his Naples-style pizza. He focuses most of his attention on the quality of dough, and it shows.
Una’s pizza crust is beautifully charred with a soft interior, and they’re topped with a wide array of unique selections, like salami and egg. Pies are a little on the small side, so if you’re on your own, make it a date with Una Pizza Napoletana.
Prince Street Pizza
Prince Street Pizza does square pizza better than anyone else in the City.
It’s a total hole-in-the-wall located in SoHo. Prince Street’s signature pie is The Spicy Spring, topped with fra diavolo sauce, fresh mozzarella and spicy pepperoni, which curls up into tiny grease-filled cups after being cooked in the oven.
